Human Identity Profiling
There is tremendous potential for the use of 2nd generation sequencing, such as the Roche FLX/Junior, Ion PGM platforms or Illumina HiSeq/MiSeq systems in human identity and forensic profiling. It promises to make analysis faster and cheaper because capillary electrophoresis is eliminated and because samples can be bar-coded with multiplex identifier (MID) tags and then combined to be analyzed at the same time. Additionally use of this sequencing technology increases the amount of information available such as mitochondria, which is particular use in profiling of degraded DNA. Comparing sequence data rather than electrophoresis results allows for the comparison of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) between samples.
